The issue is, normal Jazz 3s are really, really smooth. This means they constantly shift and slide in large fingers, which is a serious pain when trying to play for longer practice sessions due to sweat, fatigue, etc. Being a person on the larger size, my fingers completely dwarf the pick so even a minor shift ruins my ability to pick/pinch. The only way to remedy that was to grip extremely hard, which is painful over time.
These picks have nearly identical weight and form factor to the Eric Johnson picks, but are covered in a high-friction pattern that makes them anchor in my larger fingers. No noticeable slip even after hours of playing around.
Buy them if you love Jazz IIIs but need a little extra grip!
Other picks by comparison feel sloppy and loose. They are either too flat, with less pick shape to articulate the notes, are too big and clumsy, or floppy and feel like the pick is flapping in the wind. These are contoured around the edge to give plenty of angles attack against the string, they are nice and grippy with the textured pattern for your fingers and are the right level of stiffness without being overly rigid.
With respect to these being good for both pros and noobs, using a relatively rigid pick like this makes your timing much more precise. Using a floppy pick is like playing the piano with an inch of foam taped around your fingers. It makes it hard to control when the note is played. With a guitar, the note is sounded when the pick leaves the string and floppy picks create an extra degree of uncertainty about when that happens, like trying to play the guitar through a spring.
Floppy picks create a lot of extra work that you definitely don't want to have to deal with especially if you're starting out. The only thing floppy picks might be good for is adding difficulty to your playing so that when you play with a good pick like the dunlop, it's much easier by comparison. But if you just want to play guitar and have the notes come out like you intend, this pick is what you want.
These are the best there are out jar full of picks I have. Highly recommended!
