How to Train your Dragon 1 and 2 Costumes

Find out how to dress up as the characters of the epic “How to Train your Dragon” animation movie! You can choose to wear their first movie ensemble. Or you can dress up as their grown up versions in the second installment of the “How to Train your Dragon” animation movie, where their costumes look even cooler. Oh, and can you take a look at them? Puberty has been magnanimous to them!

Dress up as Young Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Part 1)

viking hat
Viking Helmet
Young Hiccup wears a Viking Helmet with horns sticking out

green tunic hiccup
Olive Green Tunic
Hiccup’s shirt is a green tunic with string details

sleeveless fur vest
Brown Faux Fur Sleeveless Vest
If you’d like to go DIY, you can purchase fabric and sew up a vest tailored especially to you. You can also use this to attach to a pair of boots

fur leg warmers
Fur Leg Warmers
If you can’t find furry boots, these are fur leg warmers you can wear instead

Dress up as Young Astrid Hofferson (Part 1)

Don’t mess with Astrid (young version or adult version!) She’s got a fighting spirit and has a battle axe as a weapon. Astrid’s outfits are great for women who wish to dress up as a kick-ass character but don’t want to show off too much skin

Leather Headband
Leather Headband on the Forehead
Astrid wears a leather band on her forehead. On normal days, this piece can add a nice boho touch to your outfit

Shoulder Armor
Shoulder Armor Pads
To prove Astrid means business, she even sports shoulder pads (with skulls and spikes no less!) Astrid’s pads are most definitely made from combat-ready steel and these shoulder pads were made to mimic such kinds of armor.

Skull Pin
Skull Pin
This has a nice creepy, viking look to it and would be perfect for Astrid’s get up. Pin it right where the shoulder pads end

Burlap
Green Burlap Ribbon
My favorite part of Astrid’s outfit is her green make-shift arm accessory, which seems to be just a piece of fabric wrapped around both arms. I saw this nice ribbon made from burlap, which should make the accessory look more organic and more appropriate for the setting of the movie. Just tie this ribbon around both arms and tie the ends

Skirt
Roman Gladiator “Skirt”
Astrid’s skirt resembles the armor gladiators wore during Roman times, except hers has some spikes on them. This gladiator costume piece should serve its purpose. If you want a more fashionable alternative, you can go for a leather skater skirt like the one below – just make sure you pair it with some skulls to give it an edge

Red Burgundy Skirt
Red Burgundy Leather Skater Skirt
If you want a piece you can wear again outside a costume event, then this red leather skirt is a good option. Use the spikes and skulls below to give it that Astrid edge!

Screwback Studs
Screwback Spike Studs
If you’re up for a DIY project, these silver spike studs would look great attached onto the skirt!

Skull Belt
Belt with Skull Design
Use a belt with skull design. The skull has fangs in it giving it a very intimidating look – even more intimidating than the one on Astrid’s outfit

Blue Leggings
Blue Seamless Leggings
The easiest part of the outfit – a pair of dark blue leggings!

Boots
Brown Fur Boots
A pair of brown fur boots caps off this elaborate costume. I think this pair is really adorable but also very rugged – I’d wear it on an ordinary winter day.

Battle Axe
Battle Axe Prop
Sport her fierce battle axe and look like a true, blue viking!

Dress up as Adult Hiccup (Part 2)

Woah. Talk about a metamorphosis! Hiccup has grown up to be a tall, muscular, handsome guy. I’ll stop my fangirl raving there. In any case, his costume has also become a lot more elaborate. He wears what seems to be a body suit made from leather, but you can improvise by wearing a brown top and a pair of brown skinny jeans. The armor is also very custom-made, but again, you can just opt for the shoulder pads (try to paint the right shoulder armor the same way as Hiccup’s)

Spiked Helmet
Spiked Helmet
Hiccup’s simple outfit from the first movie has been replaced by a tougher, battle-ready costume with a hint of Steampunk. To start with, what can be more awesome than a spiked helmet? Add a subtle extra detail by having two small braids behind your right ear, the same way he wears his hair

Belt
Black Adjustable belt
He wears several belts, 2 on his upper body, and one slung over his left shoulder. An adjustable belt is key here so that you can make sure it stays on several parts of your costume

Shoulder Armor
Shoulder Armor
This shoulder armor look really cool and is colored black like Hiccup’s.

Leather Boots
Leather Boots
Hiccup wears a leather boot. On the other, he has a prosthetic leg from the first movie’s mishap

Dress up as Adult Astrid Hofferson (Part 2)

The costume of young adult Astrid is still based on her first getup – expect the same amount of skulls, and even more fur!

Leather Headband
Leather Headband on the Forehead
If you look closely, Astrid still wears a leather band on her forehead on the second movie, though it is now partially hidden by her bangs (thanks to the person who pointed that out to me earlier). On normal days, this piece can add a nice boho touch to your outfit!

Pony
One-sided Braid Ponytail Wig
Astrid sports a one-sided hairdo in the second movie. Her hair is not exactly braided – more like coiled up, but the price and color of the wig makes it a good close choice
Fur
Light Brown Fur Shawl
Astrid wears fur over her shoulder armor

Shoulder Armor
Shoulder Armor Pads
I’m featuring the same shoulder pads as the one I recommended for Young Astrid as her shoulder pads are still made from metal

Skull Chain
Skull Chain Collar Brooch
Astrid has a skull sweater clip of sorts, and this chain collar brooch is a fashionable interpretation of it.

Red Tank Top
Red Sleeveless Shirt
The easiest part of the costume – a plain red sleeveless shirt! The shade of red is somewhere between maroon and cardinal red

Fur Arm Sleeve
Knitted Arm Warmer
This is brown and has a nice fur detail to it that should fit nicely with the whole look

Deerskin Saddle Tan Strap
Deerskin Saddle Tan Strap
Cut up a length of this then wrap around your biceps. This is made from deerskin – which is just perfect for Astrid’s look!

Fur Leg Warmer
Faux Fur Leg Warmers
You can use these leg warmers / boot covers over a plain pair of brown boots you might have hanging around your closet already

Blue Leggings
Blue Seamless Leggings
Another easy part of the outfit – a pair of dark blue leggings!

Battle Axe
Battle Axe Prop
The adult Astrid still sports a battle axe. I guess some things don’t change ;)

    • You’re right! It’s barely underneath the veil of Astrid’s hair. Thanks for pointing that out!
